West is best for sun

Finding a home in one of Galway’s most desirable areas is never easy, and finding one with a sun filled west-facing back garden is even more difficult. No 1 Glenard Road, Salthill, was built approximately 44 years ago when large, bright, spacious, living accommodation was the norm. Situated in the heart of Salthill but away from the hustle and bustle, No 1 has the additional attraction of sitting on a sun filled west facing back garden with an extra wide side entrance with lots of space and potential to extent and develop.

The Ulster Bank GAA Force Roadshow travelled to Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club on Wednesday night, where some 250 Mayo GAA fans took part in the evening’s activities. The event featured a panel discussion and questions and answers session with RTÉ pundit and Kerry GAA legend Pat Spillane, former Mayo players Liam McHale and Martin Carney, and current Galway stars Joe Bergin and Finian Hanley. The return of traffic – don’t fall victim to road rage

Most of our schools will be back over the next week or so and that means an end to the holiday season and the return of commuting traffic. The towns and cities become much busier, the weather worsens and the impatience needle moves up the dial towards red.

There’s nothing like the filthy lucre

When we were growing up, we never thought that people like the county council employee or the teacher or the guard ever cared about the filthy lucre. They were people who did the job cos it was part of what they were. In our minds, they were the salt of the earth, who came to their jobs because they had a calling, a sort of vocation brought to them on the road to Damascus, when they were struck by a strong light and told by a booming voice “Son, your future is in forward planning and Section Fours. Now go forth.” Young gardai then were not reared on diets of CSI and Midsomer Murders. No, they were hewn from Connemara rock, with necks like a jockey’s b.. ahem, like a jockey, and with a chest that ensured the silver insignia on their shoulders sat two yards apart. Teachers were normally the lucky ones in a family who would have the good luck to have had a grandmother or an aunt wealthy enough to send just one of them to third level while the rest stayed at home, fought over the farms and descended into a lifetime of alcoholism and inappropriate thoughts.

O'Toole and Henry win election contests at convention

Tourmakeady's Kevin O'Toole was elected to the post of County Secretary at the 2011 Mayo GAA Convention held in Geesala at the High Chaparral on Monday night. The former County PRO held off the challenge of sitting assistant secretary Vincent Neary and Burrishoole delegate Margaret O'Malley when the votes were counted in north Mayo. Neary held on to his position as assistant secretary for 2012 after a vote, with Achill's Packie McGinty taking over as Mayo GAA President after he was elected unopposed alongside the majority of other returning officers. The other major position up for election was that of Croke Park delegate where the incumbent delegate Jerry Henry from Castlebar Mitchels was challenged by retiring county secretary Séan Feeney. After the votes were counted the Castlebar man held on to the position for another year.
